FAQs

  • Can my primary care physician perform the immigration medical exam?

No. Only USCIS-approved doctors, known as civil surgeons, can conduct immigration medical exams. These licensed and experienced physicians, authorized by USCIS, stay up to date with immigration medical policies and guidelines.

  • How long does the immigration medical exam take?

Usually, the examination takes about 1-2 hours.

  • What should I bring to the appointment?

Please bring a government-issued ID. Also, bring previous immunization records and copies of chest X-rays, if available. Please also download and fill out the latest immigration form (I-693).

  • What should I expect?

At your appointment, our team will need a detailed history and physical, as well as the necessary blood tests (RPR, Gonorrhea) and a blood TB test.

  • What tests and procedures are required at a USCIS Civil Surgeon Clinic?

During your immigration medical exam, the following are required:

    ● Physical Examination

    ● RPR Test (Syphilis Blood Test)

    ● TB Test (Blood Test)

    ● Urine Test (Gonorrhea)

  • What vaccination proof do I need to provide?

You must provide evidence of the following vaccinations. If you don't have proof or immunity, the vaccines will be administered during your exam:

Tetanus Shot: We’ll provide the Tetanus vaccine in our office.

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Vaccine: A blood test will check your immunity. If you're not immune, you'll receive the MMR vaccine.

Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine: A blood test will determine immunity. If you're not immune, the Varicella vaccine will be administered.

Hepatitis B Vaccine (for individuals under 65 years old): You'll either receive the vaccine or have a blood test to check for previous immunity.

Hepatitis A Vaccine (for individuals under 18 years old): You'll either receive the vaccine or have a blood test to confirm immunity.

Flu Shot (Seasonal Requirement: October to March): Bring your vaccination record or get vaccinated in our office.

COVID-19 Vaccine: Provide confirmation of vaccination or get vaccinated in our office.

  • What happens after the exam?

Once your exam is complete, the civil surgeon will sign the necessary forms and place them in a sealed envelope marked with a "DO NOT OPEN" label. You must receive the envelope in this sealed condition, as USCIS will reject the form if the envelope is opened or tampered with.

As the applicant, it's your responsibility, not the civil surgeon's, to submit Form I-693 to USCIS. Be sure to include the sealed envelope with your immigration application, following the specific instructions provided either with your application or by the requesting office.

  • How long is the immigration medical exam valid?

The applicant must submit a Form I-693, signed by a civil surgeon, within 60 days before filing their application for immigration benefits. Once signed, the form remains valid for two years.

We recommend applicants schedule their medical exam as close as possible to their adjustment of status filing while allowing enough time for any required lab tests to be completed.
